From the President

“Author unknown.” Those words often appear with a saying, poem, or song.  “Author unknown” is affixed to one of my favorite hymns, “All Depends on Our Possessing,” The Lutheran Hymnal 425, Lutheran Worship 415. I specifically asked that this hymn be sung immediately before my installation as District President on July 20. This hymn begins with such a wonderful phrase, “All depends on our possessing God’s free grace and constant blessing.”   I believe that phrase is descriptive for every ministry that God has established through the congregations, schools, and missions of the Nebraska District.  It seems fitting to me that the author of the phrase is “unknown.”  This means to me that the focus of the hymn is on Christ and not the author.  There is an old phrase used by pastors in prayer before preaching God’s Word that creates the same focus, “O Lord, may I decrease so that Christ may increase.”  It is my sincere prayer that the service I now enter upon as your District President will be such a time for Christ to increase.  As did the Apostle Paul with the Philippian Christians, so I encourage all of you with the Word God gave to him that is regarded as an early Christian hymn:

"Your attitude should be the same as that of Christ Jesus: Who being in very nature God, did not consider equality with God something to be grasped, but made Himself nothing, taking the very nature of a servant, being made in human likeness.  And being found in appearance as a man, humbled Himself and became obedient to death – even death on a cross! Therefore God exalted Him to the highest place and gave Him that name that is above every name." (Philippians 2:5-9.)
