Help Victims of the Kansas Tornados

Responding to our neighbor in time of need is one of the ways to show God’s love. Volunteers are now needed for the recovery effort in Greensburg, Kansas. Needs are for both debris removal and for field walking.

All volunteers are being coordinated by Americacorps members. All volunteers and volunteer groups must make arrangement in advance by calling 314 313-4779. It is also highly recommended that you call Kathie LaShell, the Lutheran Disaster Coordinator, who can provide orientation and debriefing for your group.  Her number is 308 520-5410. Arrangements to stay in a tent camp, for volunteers who come from a distance, can also be made to through the Americorps number. It is hoped that later dorm type facilities may be made available through Orphan Grain Train. It is estimated that the need for volunteers will continue for the next 90 days.

Youth age 13-17 may also volunteer as long as they are accompanied by an adult (4 to 1 ratio). Work crews should wear sturdy shoes and work gloves, and come equipped with water, masks, and sun block. A tetanus shot, if needed, will be proved on location. Individuals trained in spiritual care (such as Stephen Ministers, etc.) are also needed. Let Kathie know if you can provide this kind of assistance.

Financial assistance can be provided for the survivors by donations that are sent to LCMS World Relief and Human Care. LCMS World Relief/Human Care gave a $30,000 emergency grant -- to be administered by Our Savior Lutheran Church, Pratt -- to help the members of Peace, Greensburg, meet immediate needs. The Synod's mercy arm also announced that it would match donations up to a total of $200,000 for those affected by tornadoes.
