Martin Honig

Martin Leonard Otto Honig, Commissioned Minister—Teacher Emeritus, departed this life on September 15, 2011, in Lincoln, Nebraska. He was born on June 9, 1933, in St. Walburg, Saskatchewan, Canada to Walter and Esther (Kaiser) Honig.  He served in the U.S. Army from 1954 to 1956.  On June 24, 1956, he married Lucy Schaenfelt in Harrington, Kansas.  Martin graduated from Concordia Teachers College in Seward, Nebraska in 1962.  Martin and Lucy have four children: Jim, Vicki, Virginia, and Valerie. 

Throughout his career he served as a teacher/principal in many Lutheran schools around the country, retiring from teaching in July of 1996.  He was a member of The Rock in Seward, Nebraska.  In recent years, he was active with Laborers for Christ.

Mr. Honig is survived by his wife, Lucy; son and his wife, Jim and Sheryl Honig of Glenn Elynn, Illinois; daughters and husbands, Vicki and Rodney Woebbecke of Seward, Nebraska, Virginia “Ginny” Gray of St. Paul, Minnesota, and Valerie and Len Mikles of Columbus, Ohio; grandchildren, Timothy Honig, Christopher Honig, Stephanie Woebbecke, Gretchen Woebbecke, Keith Gray, Jadzia Gray, Morgan Gray and Ethan Mikles; brother and wife, Harvey and Jean Honig of Madison, Wisconsin; sisters and husbands, Darlene and Gary Schmidt of Hanna City, Illinois, Eunice and George Filar of Tallahassee, Florida, and Lillian and Ken Millman/Kasbab of Naples, Florida; brothers-in-law and wives, Porter and Norma Brooks of Vienna, Virginia, Perry and Prissy Schaenfelt of Gallup, New Mexico, and Ted Ames of San Jose, California; sisters-in-law, Helga Honig of St. Louis, Missouri and Judy Honig of Peoria, Illinois.  Martin was preceded in death by his parents; brothers, David and Walter Honig; sister, Ruth Ames; and brother-in-law, Clark Millman.

The funeral service is scheduled for Friday, September 30, 2011, 3:30 p.m. at St. John Lutheran Church in Seward, Nebraska.  The family will hold a private inurnment.

Memorials have been established in care of The Rock Lutheran Church, Seward, Nebraska; Alzheimer’s Association; i EMPATHISE Organization; and St. John Lutheran School, Seward, Nebraska.
