Reinhold P. Marxhausen, teacher emeritus, Seward, Nebraska, departed this life on Saturday, April 23, 2011, at the age of 89.  He was born in Vergas, Minnesota, on April 13, 1922, to Ernst and Aurelia (Schaefer) Marxhausen.  Reinhold was united in marriage to Dorris Steinbrueck in July of 1953 at Trinity Lutheran Church, Lincoln, Nebraska.  He was a veteran of WWII, serving in the U.S. Army in the Philippines at Leyte and in New Guinea from 1943-1946.  He received a bachelor’s degree in biology from Valparaiso University in 1950.  He served as Professor of Art at Concordia College (now University), Seward, Nebraska, from 1951 until his retirement in 1990.  He studied art at Ray-Vogue School in Chicago, Illinois, the Chicago Art Institute, and received an MFA degree from Mills College in Oakland, California.

As the first full-time art instructor at Concordia College, he endeared himself to many people through his teaching, artistic creations, workshops, films, photographs, and television appearances.  His work is found in many churches, businesses, galleries, and homes.  Three of his mosaics adorn the Nebraska State Capitol building’s main hall.  His sound sculptures also earned him acclaim, and he was featured on NBC’s Late Night with David Letterman and the CBS news.

Reinhold is survived by his wife, Dorris Marxhausen, Seward; two sons, Karl (Jan) Marxhausen, Carrollton, Missouri, and Paul (Kim) Marxhausen, Lincoln, Nebraska; two grandchildren, Joel and Anne Marxhausen; two sisters, Marie (Jerry) Lodwig, Lincoln, Nebraska, and Ruth (Chuck) Kieker, New Ulm, Minnesota; and two sisters-in-law, Leorda Marxhausen, Minneapolis, Minnesota, and Evie Marxhausen, White Bear Lake, Minnesota.  Preceded in death by his parents and two brothers, Victor and John Marxhausen.

The memorial service will be held at 11:00 a.m. on Saturday, April 30, 2011, at St. John Lutheran Church in Seward.  Visitation will be from 10:00 a.m. until the service begins.
