| Zion, Omaha, Shows Love of God During Election
Zion (West) Lutheran of Omaha made part of 2004 National Election history on November 2 as the last ballot cast in the State of Nebraska was cast in her Lakeview Room at 11:40 PM. In the process, Zion made the most of this opportunity to show Christian care and compassion to nearly 600 people waiting in line when ballots ran out. This was the first year that Zion had ever hosted an election. Judging from the turnout of the primary election, the pastor and congregation expected a very small turnout from the newly-drawn precinct. When polling began at 8:00, however, a line already formed out the door of the church and down the steps. At no time during the day was the wait less than 45 minutes. As news was broadcast of the lines at Zion, parishioners began to show up and assist the crowds throughout the day. As evening approached, television stations began broadcasting live. When ballots ran out and the line snaked out the door and diwn the sidewalk, Pastor Schmitt and his members helped out by doing what comes naturally to most Lutherans: Usher people in and out of church and serve cookies and coffee. Pastor Schmitt ushered people into the pews and out of the cold. Members furiously made coffee and even went out to buy more cookies for the people stuck in line. Zion's hospitality was noted on each of the local TV stations and in the November 3 Omaha World Herald. Since then, a number of people have stopped by, called, and sent letters to express their appreciation for the hospitality Zion's members extended to them as they turned what could have been a potentially confrontational experience into a kind of impromptu neighborhood block party. Others have come and have expressed their intent to come join us in worship. We thank the Lord for using such an experience to let people see what kind of warm, caring people make up the congregation of Zion. |
